Rewind to a few months ago, I was supposed to see this crew at the Ukie Club but couldn’t swing it, so I was ecstatic that they were swinging back through one of my favorite venues in Philly…the PhilaMOCA (The Philadelphia Mausoleum of Contemporary Art).
This venue is tiny. What it lacks in traditional amenities it makes up for in an intimate venue with awesome bands and a dedicated crowd. You show up, grab a tall boy from the corner store, and stroll in to catch the bands. Or you might grab a tall boy and chill outside with one of the other bands as they wait for their set, it’s just vibes all the way down.
ANYWAYS… I had some previous obligations that caused me to miss the first openers, but I erupted onto the scene as They are Gutting a Body of Water (TAGABOW) had one of the most interesting sets I’ve experienced.

Awesome segue into Modern Color’s set, but to be frank, they played some crazy hardstyle beats between tracks and had a very Who Actually Gives a Fuck vibe during their set, which everyone appreciated. I suggest you check them out since they’re local and they are 100p Nonna approved…
Need I mention that the crowd at this show was awesome.
So, Modern Color, with the quickest stage turnover I have ever witnessed, came to give the people what they wanted.

They played a ton of tunes off From the Leaves of Your Garden as well as their newest single Greener Grass.
Honestly, I was so hyped up for this show since I missed the previous time they were in Philly that I was worried I’d be let down. Well, I was wrong, in the best way possible.
Small venues are difficult for many reasons, one being that it’s difficult to project the sound you want versus what you’re mic’d up for. If you’ve listened to any of their tunes, you know the heavy vocal lead charges the path for alternating leads and a heavy percussive presence, with the bass line driving it home. It was :chefs kiss:
Anywho… they finished up with PALE, which is my favorite track and the first track that introduced me to the band.
I can’t help but feel…that none of this is real…but it’s all I have
The words are still echoing in my ears, mainly cause I forgot my ear protection (Note: don’t do this), but seriously the entire crowd erupted to embrace the melancholic refrain to close out the show.
To say I was pleased is an understatement. Show over, I meandered over to the merch booth to grab a vinyl and chat with whoever happened to be in earshot. Ended up catching up with some people that were at the Narrow Head show! If you haven’t already check out the SITW of that show and our interview with Bleed.
Grabbed a vinyl of From the Leaves of Your Garden and chatted with Chad from the band for a bit. Honestly, such a fun and laidback show compared to what I”ve been to lately. Stoked I was able to catch them at the PhilaMOCA versus the Ukie. Such a different vibe from the typical hardcore or shoegaze-type shows I typically frequent.
