Magic City Hippies, in their own words…

Shades on and shirts unbuttoned, Magic City Hippies generate the kind of heat that could’ve powered a high seas yacht party in the seventies or shake a Coachella stage next summer. If the trio—Robby Hunter, Pat Howard, and John Coughlin—stepped off the screen from some long-lost Quentin Tarantino flick in slow-motion (instruments in hand), nobody would question it. Embracing everything from AM radio rock and poolside pop to nimble raps and salsa, they lock into an era-less vibe with no shortage of funk or hooks. The three-piece deliver the kind of bangers you can play on the way to the party, during the party, and to smooth over the comedown as the sun comes up.

The Show

Rolled up to the TLA after consuming the correct amount of gin martinis at Continental. Checked coats, reviewed merch and grabbed a brew.

Bam. Capyac takes the stage and this threesome is electric. They recently released a remix of the Hippies’ track High Beams, but we were not prepared for the outrageous musical experience that was unfolding right before our eyes. They’re phenomenal performers with some equally fantastic interpretive dance moves. We moved and swayed along as Capyac put their stamp on the TLA. They were even gracious enough to bring snacks, in the form of celery, which was delivered to the masses in an over-the-shoulder motion seen below.

Reminder: always go to the supporting acts, you never know what you might find.

Everyone’s waiting with baited breathe for the Hippies to arrive on stage. This would be my second time seeing them, first being at the Foundry last year. Very cool to see a band we love blowing up, playing bigger venues with an energetic and engaged crowd.

The Hippies came out swinging, playing a number of tunes off Water Your Garden and Hippie Castle, which was a delight. Cool to see Robby take on more guitar duties as well as his normal day job of front man. Mid song transition into Benny and the Jets was electric and the crowd went nuts.

Their set finished up with some sweet sweet keytair solos and finally a single song encore, which feature Robby’s love for voice modulation for his multi-voiced, vocal master piece “Hush.” I love this band and you should check them out asap.
