The Sicilian Slice

What We’re Listening To This Week

The Sicilians are back at it again, ready to set your table with an extravagant feast for the ears. Picture this: a sprawling antipasto of grooves, brimming with salty basslines and zesty riffs; a main course of succulent melodies cooked to perfection; and a decadent dessert of beats so sweet they’ll melt your musical heart. Pull up a chair, grab your headphones, and dig in—this week’s menu is a full sensory indulgence.

Steve’s got these on repeat:

Tailwhip – Men I Trust

Effortlessly groovy and soaked in nostalgia, Tailwhip is a sun-drenched daydream of a track. The smooth bassline and Emma’s airy vocals create a serene yet upbeat vibe that’s impossible to resist. It’s the perfect soundtrack for cruising into golden hour.

Almost Cut My Hair – Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

Raw and unapologetic, this classic encapsulates the spirit of the 1970s counterculture. David Crosby’s impassioned vocals deliver a cathartic punch, while the band’s iconic harmonies and bluesy instrumentation ground the track in timeless authenticity. It’s a visceral reminder of freedom and rebellion.

Supernova – SuperTaste

Supernova is a euphoric dive into retro-futuristic disco. With its infectious beat and shimmering synths, this track feels like an interstellar dance party. SuperTaste’s knack for blending nostalgia with modern production makes this one a standout groove.

Gianca’s spinning:

Atom Heart Mother – Pink Floyd

Growing up my dad really loved to play me a lot of later pink floyd stuff, but never really enjoyed the earlier Syd Barret stuff. It’s just so much more raw, not as cohesive but you see the signs of brilliance coming together album to album. Atom Heart mother is a 23 minute instrumental that sounds like it could be the background to a roman epic. The grandiose horns, the mystical keyboard play and ominous guitar play allows you to place yourself in the center of this epic journey and just ride the wave. Def one of my favorite pre- meddle tracks by floyd.

BABYS IN A THUNDERCLOUD – Godspeed You! Black Emperor

One of the most iconic post rock groups of all time broke their 5 year hiatus with their latest album “NO TITLE AS OF 13 FEBRUARY 2024 28,340 DEAD” and they delivered another politically charged masterpiece. BABYS IN A THUNDERCLOUD is one of my favorites off this album as it does what “Godspeed You! Black Emperor” does best ; slowly builds up a masterful piece of music. Starting off with the sounds of thunder, one by one a new instrument joins the track adding multiple layers to an originally simple sound. By the 5 minute mark of the track all the instruments have joined and it truly is an emotionally heavy song. It just carries such sadness with every chord, and makes your stomach feel so empty. When the violin is playing its solo all alone around the 7 minute mark it feels as if I am at a funeral.  Just a truly hard hitting emotional track that is one of the best in their discography.

Holy, Holy – Geordie Greep

Now this truly might be one of the most interesting releases of 2024 and I consider this to be my album of the year. A combination of Steely Dan, modern latin elements, and an absolutely unhinged vocalist lead to one of the most unique albums I had heard in a long time. The instrumentation on this record coupled with Geordie’s vocals just really makes me feel like i am listening to the second coming of Steely Dan. Just such a fun track that makes me want to dance down the street whenever it’s in my headphones.

SONG OF THE WEEK

Queen of Wands – Kainalu

Queen of Wands is a cosmic blend of psychedelic grooves and dreamy funk. Kainalu’s lush production creates an otherworldly soundscape, with shimmering synths and pulsing basslines that swirl around you like a warm breeze. It’s an enchanting track that feels like dancing under the stars, embodying both mysticism and irresistible rhythm.

That’s what’s been on rotation this week—see you next time with more picks to soundtrack your days.
